2008 Northeast Indiana Business Dynamics Survey
Bookmark and Share

The Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership, in collaboration with the Community Research Institute (CRI), has issued the Northeast Indiana Business Dynamics Survey for the calendar year 2008. The Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly also released a portion of this survey in this week’s publication.

The Business Dynamic Survey reports on all business activity including expansions, new business announcements, layoffs, closings, downsizings and acquisitions. Based on announcements and known activities, this report generates a snapshot of the regional business climate for 2008.

The Survey provides a summary of business activity throughout the 11-county region and includes compiled data from northeast Indiana’s six target industries; advanced materials, defense, food processing, insurance and financial services, medical devices and logistics. This year marks the first time in which all six target industries have been included in the data compilation, increasing the survey’s breadth from previous coverage of only manufacturing related events.

The Survey reports that there has been an increase in the amount of jobs lost; however, 2008 still showed more jobs created in northeast Indiana than those terminated. With 3,950 new jobs in the area, over a billion dollars have been invested in the region with new business openings and expansions. The 2008 report also highlights expansions as the most active and recurring business event in northeast Indiana.

Northeast Indiana Claims Portion of Hoosier Defense Industry Growth
Bookmark and Share

The commercial defense industry has been one of few industries to avoid the catastrophic downturns in demand over the past several months. Luckily for Indiana, and northeast Indiana, we claim a large portion of commercial defense contracts which provides product and service demand for large and small companies alike; all working to meet the needs of this fast-growing industry.

With more than $2 billion in federal defense-related contracts, Fort Wayne is home to big players in the industry: Raytheon, General Dynamics & ITT, in addition to several others. And smaller companies in the area are stepping up and providing the necessary resources and manpower to supply the commercial defense industry with vital products.

Thankfully, Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana have everything necessary to support this growing industry at our fingertips. Most significantly, Fort Wayne is actively supplying the workforce with excellently trained wireless and system engineers through programs on the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) campus. Adding to this effort are countless other community colleges and vocational schools that have adapted their curriculum to meet the high tech needs of the area.

As Indiana prepares to attract a growing number of defense contracts in the coming months, northeast Indiana is poised and ready to continue its incubation of this industry.

Excerpts from "Memo to Pasadena"
Bookmark and Share

John Sampson
President/CEO of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership

Never heard of the historic link between Indiana and Pasadena, which was nearly named “Hoosier” in the late 1880s? Consider this: In what might be thought of as a prototype of sorts for 2008, some 120 years ago in 1888 the region around Pasadena suffered a collapse in the local real estate industry. The city, founded by entrepreneurs from Indianapolis, cast about for an idea to prop up the economy of the region. The solution? A Pasadena academic declared in 1889: “Let us hold a festival to tell the world about our paradise.”

Local organizers thus put together an Olympic-style event in the middle of the mild California winter, complete with chariot races, track and field events, and bronco-busting demonstrations. In a public relations coup, the organizers invited the editors of Indianapolis and Midwestern newspapers to serve as judges to secure widespread publicity. They called the event “The Tournament of Roses” and it was an instant success.

Today, with an overcrowded region and an international reputation, there obviously exists no need to raise awareness of the former Indiana Colony’s attributes.

As Southern California residents watch highlights of the Vera Bradley float passing before the cameras on Orange Grove Boulevard, perhaps local residents of the former Indiana Colony would do well to Google Indiana’s recent economic performance. There they would find that CNBC named Indiana as “the most improved state for business” and that Standard & Poor’s recently awarded the state its first ever triple-A bond rating. They would further find that Indiana was one of a small handful of states who finished their recent fiscal year with a billion-plus surplus, rather than a deficit of titanic proportions. If they Googled Indianapolis, the place where Pasadena was dreamed up, they would find that it is home to BioCrossroads, a highly successful biotech association busily building new technology bridges with Southern California.

And if they wanted to take a look at Vera Bradley’s hometown of Fort Wayne in Northeast Indiana, they might be surprised to find that wireless communication – the origin of cell phone technology – was invented and put into production here. They would also find a multi-billion-dollar high-tech commercial defense industry, a state-of-the-art digital truck design facility at NaviStar, a growing medical device sector, and a region that generally reflects an increasingly progressive state of Hoosier growth.
